Solar Panel Cleaning Brushes: Which Filament Won't Scratch the Glass
Buying guide · 5 min read · updated 2026-06-26
Solar modules have a delicate anti-reflective (AR) coating on the front glass. The wrong cleaning brush — too stiff or too coarse — leaves micro-scratches that permanently cut output. The right one cleans without ever touching the coating aggressively.
This guide explains what makes a brush safe for PV glass and how to spec a cleaning roller.
What makes a brush PV-safe
- Soft filament — soft nylon (PA66) flexes against the glass instead of dragging grit across it.
- Fine filament diameter — around 0.15–0.20 mm so the bristle tips are gentle on the AR coating.
- Even, dense fill — spreads contact pressure and avoids streaks.
- Water-fed design — pairs with a water feed so dust is floated away, not ground in.
Spec the roller to your system
Robotic and tractor-mounted cleaners use a cylindrical roller brush. The two numbers to fix are outer diameter and length. A common size is 170 mm OD × 900 mm, as on our PV solar panel cleaning spiral roller (soft PA66, 0.15–0.20 mm filament), with other lengths such as 110×903, 150×903 and 150×1200 mm available. For high-throughput systems, the scratch-proof Nylon-66 PV roller (170 mm × 90 cm) uses an optimized filament density to clean without abrading the glass.
Avoid these mistakes
- Don't reuse a stiff industrial roller — filament that is fine for steel is too harsh for AR glass.
- Don't clean dry — always pair with water; dry dust acts as an abrasive.
- Don't let sand build up in the bristles — rinse the roller so trapped grit can't scratch.
Frequently asked questions
- What filament won't scratch solar panels?
- Soft Nylon (PA66) with a fine diameter around 0.15–0.20 mm. It is flexible enough to wipe dust off the anti-reflective coating without abrading it, especially when used with a water feed.
- What roller size do I need?
- Match the outer diameter and length to your cleaning machine. 170 mm OD is common; lengths from roughly 900 mm to 1200 mm cover most robotic and water-fed systems. Custom lengths are available.
