Makeup Brush Materials Explained: Synthetic Taklon vs Natural Goat Hair

Buying guide · 6 min read · updated 2026-10-05

The single biggest factor in how a makeup brush performs is the fiber, not the handle or ferrule. Synthetic and natural fiber behave differently with liquid versus powder product, and buyers sourcing a line often need both in the same range.

1. Two fiber families

Synthetic Taklon(smooth, tapered)Natural Goat Hair(flagged, split ends)
Synthetic Taklon: smooth, tapered, non-porous. Natural goat hair: flagged (split) tips that hold more product.

Synthetic Taklon fiber is smooth and non-porous — it doesn't absorb liquid product, which makes it the standard choice for foundation, concealer and cream products where you want the brush to apply product rather than soak it up. It's also vegan and cruelty-free by construction. Natural goat hair has microscopic flagged (split) tips that trap and hold fine powder particles, picking up and releasing loose or pressed powder more evenly than a smooth synthetic fiber.

2. Which fiber for which product

Product typeBetter fiberWhy
Liquid / cream foundation, concealerSynthetic (Taklon)Non-porous — applies product instead of absorbing it
Loose / pressed powder, blush, bronzerNatural (goat hair)Flagged tips pick up and diffuse fine powder particles evenly
Cream-to-powder, mixed formulasSynthetic, or a synthetic/natural blendAvoids absorption of the cream component while still handling powder

3. Vegan and cruelty-free sourcing

If a line needs to be marketed as vegan or cruelty-free, synthetic Taklon is the straightforward choice — see our synthetic fiber foundation brush. Natural goat hair, like our natural goat hair powder brush, is a by-product material (not farmed for the hair specifically), but buyers with a strict vegan positioning should specify synthetic across the full range rather than mixing.

4. Specifying fiber for a custom order

For custom development, fiber type is one of the first specs to lock down, alongside ferrule material (aluminium is standard) and handle material (wood or plastic). If you're unsure which fiber fits a new product concept, sending a reference brush or a description of the intended makeup product via RFQ is enough for us to recommend a fiber.

Frequently asked questions

Is synthetic fiber lower quality than natural hair?
No — it's a different tool for a different job. Synthetic is actually the better performer for liquid and cream products; natural hair is better suited to powder.
Can one brush use both fiber types?
Yes, blended-fiber brushes exist and are sometimes used for dual-purpose brushes (e.g. cream-to-powder). Specify the ratio you want in a custom RFQ.
Does natural goat hair shed more than synthetic?
Natural fiber generally has a shorter service life and can shed slightly more over time than synthetic monofilament, which is a factor worth weighing for a high-use professional line.
